How to Cut Your Hair at Home Like a Pro: 7 Tips

You might be scared by things that require a certain level of professionalism, especially when it comes to things that affect your appearance.

However, you shouldn’t be afraid of cutting your own hair – it’s actually easier than you might think. It takes no skills or education whatsoever – the only thing you’ll need to do is follow some simple steps and you can’t go wrong.

We are here for you, we covered everything, so… good luck!

1. Gather your supplies.

First things first, you need to have all the supplies at hand: scissors, hair clips, hair brush, water bottle, hair bands, the whole package. The scissors are gonna have to be really sharp for the best results, otherwise, this whole thing won’t work.

2. Think about what you want to do and what you can do.

Think about the hair style you are trying to get and always take baby steps. When it comes to cutting your hair, a little goes a long way – you can always cut more, but you can’t go back once you’ve cut more than you should’ve.

3. If you don’t have layers, you can shorten your ponytail.

Start by combing your hair to make sure you have no knots in the cutting process. Normal combing techniques work, but you can also finish off from the back to the front to make sure there are absolutely no knots and tie it up in a ponytail.

Then, you will need to use a ruler to be able to determine how much you want to cut and use your fingers or a hair clip to mark the length. Don’t forget, a little goes a long way.

Cut at the point where you measured with your ruler, maybe a thumb away from the place just in case.

4. If you want to make layers, start by using a front section to create a guide.

Start with the front layer, section it, and twist it -this will give your hair a more natural effect. Your fingers are gonna be your guides. Pinch your hair to mark the specific length that you want.

5. Cut vertically for a softer finish and horizontally for blunt edges.

It’s always better to cut vertically, unless you’re trying to make a perfect line at the bottom of your hair.

6. Using guides as a reference, take small sections of hair and cut.

Always use a small section of the previously cut hair with a new section of uncut hair and cut based on the first section.

7. Pointcut the split ends upward.

Point the split ends like in the picture and cut them with short cuts into them.
