The National Transportation Safety Board said that a small aviation crash on Long Island on Sunday afternoon resulted in one fatality and two critical injuries.
Around 3 p.m., a single-engine Piper PA 28 crashed in Farmingdale, New York, as it was heading for Republic Airport, according to authorities. According to the Suffolk County Police Department, it had three people on board when it took off from Republic Airport in East Farmingdale.
The pilot “gave a mayday signal and indicated there was smoke in the cockpit,” according to Suffolk police, shortly after departure.
According to authorities, the plane crashed in Lindenhurst, close to North Wellwood Avenue and 5th Street.
Two passengers from the plane were transferred to Stony Brook University Hospital for treatment of critical injuries, according to authorities, while one person was declared dead at the scene.
The NTSB and Federal Aviation Administration will look into the matter.
