The FBI is looking for four American citizens who were abducted in Mexico, the US Embassy in Mexico City announced on Sunday.

In a white minivan with North Carolina license plates, the American citizens entered Matamoros, in the northeastern state of Tamaulipas, just south of Brownsville, Texas, on Friday, the embassy reported.

“Unknown gunmen opened fire on the passengers of the car shortly after it entered Mexican territory.” The shooters forced the four Americans into another vehicle before taking off from the site with them “based on the embassy.”

The FBI is currently seeking assistance from the general public in locating potential suspects and is providing a $50,000 prize, the embassy added.
